More: The Temptations
Comments: I love The Temptations, which I guess is evident by the mere fact that I purchased a five disc fuckin' set. This set combines early shit, classics, alternate mixes and even some unreleased shit. It just does a great job of showing the greatness of The Temptations legacy. I've gotten a few chances to see The Temptations live and I even shook Otis Williams' (the last living original Temptation) hand, and this set is the next best thing. - D
From 1961 to the present day, there have been a total of 15 voices which have made up Motown's fab five, The Temptations. But of them all, there are only five that were regarded as one of the most prominent black vocal groups of the `60s. These black supermen were: David Ruffin (his raspy, soulful preacher-like vocals were grossly underrated), Melvin Frankin, Paul Williams, Otis Williams and the definitive falsetto of Eddie Kendricks. Emperors Of Soul is a well-deserved five-CD collection that is tough to close once you have discovered the three decades of crucial music. Disc one is peppered with a handful of pre-Temptations/pre-David Ruffin cuts like "Come On" by Otis Williams & The Distants and eight cuts from their debut, Meet The Temptations. Discs two and three refelect the Temps' most essential work: Voyaging from 1965's "Get Ready" and "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" to their psychedelic soul days of records like Psychedelic Shack, Puzzle People and the cuts "Don't Let The Joneses Get You Down," "Message From A Black Man" and the epic "Papa Was A Rolling Stone." Discs four and five probably could be combined into one, documenting the line-up that only contained two original members (Frankin and Otis Williams), but they are important to the Temptations lineage and do offer some decent latter-day singles, some fine unreleased tracks (check out 1989's "My Kind Of Woman" featuring Ice-T), as well as four new songs recorded last winter. Don't be too proud to beg for this one. - From CDNow.com
