When former Ruffhouse Records leader Chris Schwartz launched his RuffNation Records in 1999, the first release he put out on RuffNation's Ruff Life label was by the Outsidaz-a hardcore rap outfit from northern New Jersey that should not be confused with either the Cleveland pop-rock band the Outsiders (who were best known for their 1966 hit "Time Won't Let Me") or the 1960s Dutch rock band the Outsiders. The Outsidaz's first Ruff Life single, "The Rah Rah," was released in December 1999, followed by its six-song EP Night Life in January 2000. But the origins of the group (whose members include Young Zee, Pace Won, Slang Ton, Yah Ya, Ax, D.U., Az-Izz, Leun One, NawShis, DJ Muhammed and Denton) actually go back to the early 1990s. At first, Young Zee and Pace were rival MCs-Pace had a group called PNS, while Zee headed the group Skitzo. When PNS and Skitzo had a length microphone battle in Newark, NJ in 1991, Zee and Pace felt that neither group won the competition-it was a tie-and decided to unite into one group as the Outsidaz. Around 1995, the Outsidaz came to the attention of the Fugees, who went on to employ them on their song "Cowboys." Eventually, the Outsidaz signed with Ruffhouse/Columbia, but when Schwartz left Ruffhouse, they went with him and ended up on Ruff Life. — Alex Henderson
With his charismatic yelp and brash personality, Young Zee is the best-recognized member of the Outsidaz, a large hip-hop crew that became the first act signed to Ruff Life Records. What he isn't always recognized for is his solo career, where he has produced several singles and even released a record in the mid-'90s. He first garnered notice in 1995, when his "Everybody Get" single became the first major release from the Outsidaz collective. Next was an appearance on the Fugees' "Cowboys," one of the tracks on their surprise hit record The Score. This appearance was enough to convince indie label Perspective to sign the rapper for an album, and by the end of the year he had dropped Musical Meltdown. Although the disc made little headway, the Outsidaz's reputation continued to grow in underground hip-hop until they had become one of the most sought-after groups in the East Coast scene. That's when Ruffhouse Records stepped in, signing the collective in 1999. Zee made an appearance on Rah Digga's first solo album around the same time, before discovering that labelhead Chris Schwartz had left Ruffhouse and started Ruff Life Records. Schwartz contacted the group about switching sides, and by the end of the year their contract had been bought out by the upstart label. The Outsidaz released Night Life in 2000, an angry EP that was heavy on bravado and featured battle tracks between one another. Zee began to increase his solo output as well, lending tracks to several compilations in 2001. The next year he reached his greatest exposure yet when his solo track, "That's My Nigga fo' Real," was included on the smash-hit soundtrack to Eminem's film 8 Mile. - Bradley Torreano
As a founding member of the Outsidaz, Pacewon was one of the many MCs to gain a solo career after his group's appearance on the Fugees' successful The Score. With a smooth voice and a sly, clever tone, his raps were often relaxed and thoughtful amidst the large hip-hop crew's various styles. Despite the early solo attempts by many of his bandmates, Pacewon waited until they had released their debut, Night Life, on Chris Schwartz's Rough Life Records. That, as well as guest appearances on records from Redman and Rah Digga, was enough to convince Schwartz to ask the MC for a solo record in 2002. With help from Wyclef Jean, Kurupt, and fellow Outsidaz member Young Zee, he put together Won, a collection of funky tracks courtesy of Jay-Z producer SKI that revolved around his charismatic voice and boastful rhymes. Later in the year, he collaborated with U.K. trip-hop act Morcheeba, who included the rapper on the title track of Charango. - Bradley Torreano
