Discovered by Third Bass' MC Serch, during the heyday of Wild Pitch Records, Non-Phixion quickly generated a lot of hype — and went through a number of labels — before their long-awaited debut was finally released. Composed of MCs Ill Bill, Goretex Medinah, and Sabac Red, along with DJ Eclipse, Non-Phixion mixed graphic, unsettling lyrics over dirty, gritty beats — often composed by Ill Bill's brother, the even more controversial Necro. After dropping their debut single, "Legacy," on Fat Beats, Non-Phixion was quickly snatched up by Geffen. The incendiary content of songs like "I Shot Reagan," 1998, may have been a bit much for the major label, and the group soon moved to the more independent Matador. Non-Phixion's The Future Is Now was basically complete and the album was hotly anticipated by this point. After releasing the Black Helicopters 12", though, Non-Phixion abruptly left Matador. The buzz around the band continued to grow as Non-Phixion released more singles and several collaborations, often involving Necro and his emergent Psycho-Logical Records. Finally, in 2001, Non-Phixion landed at Warner Bros. and The Future Is Now finally appeared set for release. That was not to be, however, for whatever reason the release was delayed and when it did arrive in the spring of 2002, it was on Uncle Howie Records. - Martin Woodside
Driven by an affinity for graphic violence, porn, and government conspiracy theories, Ill Bill (William Braunstein) is best known as the founder and frontman of four-man underground rap group Non Phixion. Because of the group's racy subject matter, Non Phixion constantly found themselves bouncing from label to label during the late '90s, despite acclaimed 12" singles like I Shot Reagan and Black Helicopter (both produced by Ill Bill's brother Necro). Ill Bill had to establish the independent Uncle Howie Records before the Brooklyn-based crew could finally issue its debut album, The Future Is Now, in 2002. Through his label, the hardcore MC/producer initiated his solo career with his first album, What's Wrong With Bill? (2004), as well as with a series of Ill Bill Is the Future mixtapes. But after Non Phixion officially broke up in 2006, he also oversaw and pressed solo material by NP members DJ Eclipse and Sabac Red. Two years before his second full-length, The Hour of Reprisal, arrived in 2008, Ill Bill co-founded La Coka Nostra, a collective that also includes DJ Muggs and members of House Of Pain, among others. - Cyril Cordor
Formerly a member of disbanded quartet Non-Phixion, angst-ridden and politically minded rapper Sabac, also known as Sabac Red, was born John Fuentes in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico before he relocated to Brooklyn with his Italian mother at age four. By his early teens, he was obsessed with hip-hop culture and was developing into a formidable MC. In high school, he participated in various street promotional teams which represented popular hip-hop acts of the time, like Big Daddy Kane and Greg Nice, but also had his fair share of run-ins with the law. After finishing a two-year program in recording engineering, he joined the staff of revered hip-hop label Wild Pitch as its director of college radio promotions. It was not until 1995 that he crossed paths with Ill Bill, who would become Non-Phixion's frontman. However, Non-Phixion's underground debut, The Future Is Now, did not receive a proper release until 2002. Recording solo, Sabac relied on Ill Bill's brother and Non-Phixion beatsmith Necro to produce his solo debut, Sabacolypse: A Change Gon' Come, which was issued on Necro's Psycho Logical imprint in 2004. Despite Non-Phixion's breakup in 2006, Sabac continued to work with Ill Bill and Necro and recorded music for their respective labels. Several mixtapes were released in the following years, including The Collabo Collection series, of which the second volume in 2007 featured the production of duo Blue Sky Black Death. - Cyril Cordor
