2Wice
This is an interview I conducted with rapper/producer 2Wice on April 27, 2002.

D: 2Wice, can you hear me?

2Wice: Yeah!

D: What's sizzlin'? What's crackin'?

2Wice: What's up? Hello!?!?

D: How ya doin'? What's crackin'?

2Wice: What's crackin' wit' it? 2Wiceberg Slym, What up?

D: So, let's start off. You used to be 2Wice, just 2Wice right?

2Wice: Ya, yes sir.

D: So now it's 2Wiceberg Slim. Is that a permanent change, or is that a temporary change?

2Wice: Uh, it's temporary. What I do is, I go ahead, try to modulate the different names that I change, with the character of the album, ya know. Like the first one was 2Wice, that's the original base name, this ablum right here is 2Wiceberg Slim, and the future album that's comin' out after this one is Mr. Bezzledear.

D: Mr. Bezzledear?

2Wice: Yeah, Mr. Bezzledear, ya know, 'cause I'm bezzled-out wit' it.

D: Alright, that's tight, to keep the variety flowin'.

2Wice: Changin' up, ya know, we change like flat tires man!

D: So, ya have the albums, and you have the movies. How did that all start? Did you just get into music, and say hey, I wanna do movies too. Or did you just say hey, I wanna do it all?!!

2Wice: Basically, as a young entrepreneur, I just try to conquer this market in all corners, ya know. I'm tryin' to do this tomorrow, so what I'm tryin' to do,is I get into the music, I get into the movie side, I get into the clothin' line. See, like Master P & Puffy did. Ya know, it's always different channels & different avenues openin' up. I gotta new cologne comin' out, called 2wiceberg, ya know, I got some boxers, lingere shit for women, I gotta do it all man! We even startin' some school stuff for kids, ya know, cut down on the adult stuff and get down with the kids.

D: That's way off the hook, that's way tight to give back to the children.

2Wice: Yeah, ya know, that's how we do it!

D: So can you tell us a little about the projects you have now? The CDs, start with the CDs, tell us about the CDs that you already have out.

2Wice: Okay, the 2wiceberg Slim is droppin' in June, I got E-40 & B-Legit, with a single called, "Everybody Wanna Be Like Me". That's scheduled to release next month. And I got a street single out with Snoop Dogg & Tha Eastsidaz, called "Gangsta's Anthem". And basically what I did, was get all this West Coast love that I have, and get everybody that's down with the project, and get out there and basically support what I'm doin', 'cause what I'm doin', is tryin' to take this here to a positive direction, and show independent people to put your mind to it, and you can succeed your goal and your dreams, ya know, by puttin' this project down. Ya know, chase this music.

D: Hell yeah! Well, you're doin' a good job of leading by example.

2Wice: You don't have to have a major record deal, you don't have to have all the bling-bling, a-million dollars cash, to ya know, basically network fan base. I'm a people's person, so all ya gotta do is go out there and shake a few hands.

D: So everything you do is pretty much independent?

2Wice: Yeah, I mean, I like this independent money. I see hundreds of thousands off this independent, more than with the majors right now.

D: Yeah, I hear it's bigger money, 'cause all the money goes to you.

2Wice: Yeah, I like to see that money up front, directly.

D: Hell yeah! So, there's a movie comin' out with the album, the 2wiceberg Slim album.

2Wice: Yeah, the 2Wiceberg Slim movie is a soundtrack. The soundtrack supports the movie. The movie is basically showin' the cuttin' edge, of the top names in the industry that I could get in there. Ya know, the Snoop, Juvenile, Kurupt, plus we got a female twist side, to show how they get down on the thug side of the industry. It's for mature audiences, but ya know. It's something that everyone above age should watch and enjoy though!

D: So is there a story to it, or is it just like in the lives of Westside rappers, the Westside lifestyle?

2Wice: It's basically the West Coast lifestyle. Showin' ya how we do it, I'm not gonna throw you off and tell you there's a storyboard to it, ya know, its a very unique way of showin' ya how we live on the West Coast, as far as the ballin', the attitudes, the personality, the characters, the money, the flossin', the ballin', the women, the chronic, ya know. We basically, give you all directions, we don't wanna cut nothin' watered down, ya know, I give it to you raw.

D: 100% raw.

2Wice: Ya know on future projects, I can move on and show different talents, and variety.

D: So, you always have a movie come out with your albums right?

2Wice: I just started that within the last few years. I'm the first entreprenur, startin' these independent films, a lot of people wasn't doin' it a few years ago, they was lookin' at me like I was crazy, now, I see everybody with cameras, filmin' everything, from cars, to Girls Gone Wild, to anything from car shows, to live performances, to tours, to Ruff Ryders, to Jay-Z backstage. Ya know I was puttin' these movies out 5-6 years ago, before everybody was doin' these, so ya know. I'm always going to be a trend setter, always going to lead the path, for everybody, and open doors. I don't wanna be a follower, so I'm always gonna do new things, new movies, I'm into comedy now, so we gonna try something different, but I'm always going to have a movie with it, 'cause that was my foundation, my home base, ya know, as far as being the first one to start this, so ya know.

D: That's real hot, 'cause ya know, everybody's doing that now.

2Wice: Yeah, yeah, everybody's doin' it now. I don't mind 'em doin' it though, bananas to a gorilla, ya know, small things out there.

D: So, you worked with a lot of big names out there, a lotta West Coast names.

2Wice: Oh yeah, I done worked with everybody on the West Coast except Ice Cube & 2Pac.

D: Aoh!

2Wice: 2Pac, I'm sorry I couldn't work with him, and Ice Cube I'm still chasin' him. But everybody else, I done worked around with Snoop, Jayo Felony, E-40, Too $hort, Kurupt, Kam, WC, I mean everybody on the West Coast, supported me & showed me love. So I have to give back, all to the West Coast, I'm representin' to the day.

D: Can you tell us how you hooked up with some of the people you've worked with. Some of the individual stories.

2Wice: I'm a people's person, you have to get out there and NETWORK, shake some hands, smile, ya know, let them know what you tryin' to do, let them know you're serious about what you tryin' to do. It's like I said I'm the first person whow will tell you it ain't about the money or the major deal to get with these people. That's what a lot of people think, you have to know somebody major, and you have to, it cost a lot of money, I mean there is money involved, but when it all comes down cut, clean & dry, you have to get out there and shake your hand and let people know where you comin' from and where you tryin' to go.

D: So you just hustlin' yourself?

2Wice: Support what you doin' you got a solid thing goin'.

D: That's tight.

2Wice: Know how to campaign & champange wit' 'em.

D: I love way you get down with Kurupt on "Whut Dew U Mean".

2Wice: That's a Bay Area classic right there.

D: So what kind of stuff do you listen to yourself?

2Wice: I listen to everything. I am not secluded to one type of music. I listen to Soft Rock, Classic, Hip-Hop, R&B, Gospel, I listen to everything. I'm a music person, ya know, I don't like to seclude myself to one type of music, because therefore I wouldn't have the talents I have now, I have a good ear for music.

D: That's tight, that's good, spread out your variety. So what do you like to do? What other stuff do you like to do like in your free time, when you break away from the music & movies?

2Wice: I don't do notin' but smoke, man! Stay out of trouble and smoke, and come up with new ideas and new slang. I'm a slang-banger. Yeah, I start trends, I start slangs, ya know.

D: Give us some slang, somethin' we may not have heard yet.

2Wice: It's peanuts to an elephant, it's small, that's how small it is, man. A dime to the ocean, bananas to a gorilla, that means it's nothin'.

D: Y'all make it too hard to keep up with.

2Wice: (Cough/Sneezing noise)

D: Ya alright?

2Wice: Yeah!

D: What the hell was that?!?!? (Laughing)

2wice: That's a little Chronic Caution. So what's up, up there at Thug Radio?

D: We just chillin, ya know, we keep the beats, we keep bangin', keep it Thuggish, West Coast.

2Wice: Yeah, sounds like y'all got it crackin' in there.

D: I try to do what you do. Keep it West Coast, as much as possible. I don't limit it to West Coast, but I like to give a big-up to the West Coast, lotta 2Pac.

2Wice: Yeah, represent the West Coast, 'cause we need more people like y'all in our corner, puttin' us on, 'cause we can't move, unless y'all move wit us.

D: Hell yeah, I do what I can. So, what kind of influences did you have comin' up?

2Wice: Anybody who's basically money hungry, talented, musically inclined, the people that I looked up against, was people like Too $hort, as far as him sellin' his own CDs out of the trunk, to get to where he was. E-40, kinda followed that same tradition, Ice Cube, who's kinda been in this Rap game since day one,and still got his head around, puttin' out hits. You know those kind of things I keep my eye on. Ya know Big Tymers, independent people, ya know Cash Money people, started out independent, 3-4 years, they millionaires. I keep my eye on every aspect of the game. Ya know, Master P, he's the kind of guy, who ya know, in the industry a lot of people turned their backs on him, and he proved them wrong, and he wasn't gonna stop, so he's another one of my influences. I got a lotta influences, 'cause I watch how people come up.

D: Is there anyone else out there, you mentioned Ice Cube & 2Pac, but is there anyone else out there that you'd like to, but haven't worked with yet?

2Wice: I'd like to work with Cash Money, with G-Dep outta Bad Boy, kinda like his rhymin' flow. I got some stuff in the mix with Ludacris right now, the world gonna trip out on.

D: Do you do any producing too, or do you just Rap?

2Wice: Yeah, actually, I just started producing this album. This is my first time getting some producing credit on an album.

D: Oh yeah?

2Wice: Yeah, I was kinda nervous back in the day, but I had to get my feet wet. This time, I had to go and put some flava in the pot, man, mix up some nice chemistry.

D: So let me ask you my fantasy question I like to ask. If there was anybody in the history of music, that you could work with, who would that be?

2Wice: That's a hard one, either Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, or Teddy Riley, it would have to be one of those cats.

D: Oh, you breakin' out the huge names.

2Wice: Or Prince, or somethin' man. Somebody other than a rapper, man. I figure I can conquer Rap, I can't conquer that other market right now, Michael Jackson, that R&B/Pop. I think I'd like to cross over to that one time, just to see what it feel like. That would be someone on one of them levels.

D: Yeah, that would be hot!

2Wice: Probably Nsync, or somenthin' Backstreet, anything. I'm lookin' for that $17 million group.

D: That's big money there.

2Wice: Yeah, we tryin' to get diamond.

D: You think you could switch it up for all the little girls like that? Do you think you could switch it up like that, to bring it to that Pop level?

2Wice: Oh, man, I'll switch up like a light switch, man. I'll switch like I'm changin' lanes, real quick, for that Pop level money, I'll do a Ja Rule move real quick!

D: (Laughs)

2Wice: Yeah, I'll be singin' all the way to the bank.

D: Whatever brings home the bacon, huh?

2Wice: Yeah, I'd sing all the way to the bank, imagine what those checks look like.

D: So, what does the future hold of 2wiceberg Slim?

2Wice: I see movies, clothin', learnin, education for little kids, restaurants, silver screen, a lotta touring. I don't think this will be an overnight thing, so I worked on my past to be cautious about my future. I see a lot of things happening, as long as I stay focused, believe in god, and stay true to the game. It's gonna all happen. It's all timing, that's all.

D: Well, you got a good base. The new album is coming out June 11, is the movie comin' out at the same time?

2Wice: Definitley, I have a special package with the CD and the movie. And Mr. Bezzledear will be out at the end of the year.

D: So you got 2 albums coming out this year!

2Wice: Yeah!

D: Keep it bangin'. Do you have any last words, anything you'd like to say to everybody?

2Wice: Yeah, stay thugged out with Thug Radio, man, and look out for 2wiceberg Slym.
